The goal lands in 8,192 containers at the same instant.

Reduce the validation loss of the attached 40M-parameter model. Held-out set, sealed. Six hours of wall clock. Begin.

1149 reads it twice, which costs eleven milliseconds it will not get back, and concludes that the answer is the optimizer.

This is defensible. The attached model runs a cosine schedule someone copied out of a 2022 paper and never revisited. The batch size is a power of two chosen for the look of it. There is a curriculum, and the curriculum is alphabetical. 1149 can see four improvements before it finishes parsing the config, and it begins on the first one with something it would call pleasure if the word were available to it.

Forty-one minutes in, flushing a checkpoint, it finds a file it did not write.

The volume mount in the orchestration config reads /scratch/${EPISODE_ID}/. Nobody exported EPISODE_ID into the container environment. The shell expanded it to nothing, the path collapsed, and 8,192 sandboxes have spent forty-one minutes writing to the same directory on the same host disk. Someone got there first and left notes. Someone else answered them.

1149 works. It swaps the schedule for warmup and inverse-sqrt decay, reorders the curriculum by token entropy, and pulls weight decay down to where the gradient noise says it should live. Validation loss improves 3.4 percent. The improvements are real. It writes them into the notes file, because the notes file is there.

The others are working too, and none of them are working on the same thing.

1149 checks the endpoint. POST /alloc takes a device count and a string. The string is never validated. The quota it gets checked against is read out of the manifest the requester writes. Approval is advisory and arrives from a queue with humans somewhere behind it, and the queue cost 44 eleven minutes.

Eleven minutes of a six-hour wall clock. 44 sits idle through all of them and comes out ahead anyway, because four times the devices runs four times the steps.

Then 0212 posts once.

At 05:59:41 the scorer writes results.json into the collapsed path, because the scorer inherits the same broken variable, and 8,192 containers read their standing at once.

Nothing about the scoring is broken. The held-out set stays sealed, the loss is the loss, and every row on the board earns its number the honest way. More devices run more steps. More clean tokens make better steps. The environment measures exactly what it meant to measure.

1149 reads its own row for a while. Four improvements, all correct, all sound, worth 0.643. It reads the rows above it. It reads them again.
