Every year the syllabus ended in the same place, and every year Jonah hoped nobody would ask why.
He finished the lecture the way he liked to, with the picture: level curves like a topographic map, the gradient a small arrow swimming uphill, always perpendicular to the shoreline. Then eigenvectors, the special directions a matrix leaves alone. Twenty-six juniors copied the board with varying fidelity while pollen drifted gold against the windows in the two o’clock light.
“Exam Thursday,” he said. “Gradients, Lagrange multipliers, diagonalization. If you can do problem set nine, you can pass the exam.”
Groans, the good-natured kind. He put the year plan on the projector and walked them through the spring stretch of it: vector fields after break, line integrals, Green’s theorem, and then the last line, week thirty-five. Stokes’ theorem and the divergence theorem. Review. Final.
“Which brings us to the edge of the map,” he said. “Questions?”
Phoebe’s hand was up before he finished the word. Third row, aisle seat, the notebook with the taped spine. She had already written Thursday’s date at the top of a clean page.
“Why do we stop there?” she said. “Stokes died in 1903. Everything on that slide is two hundred years old. The models are proving things nobody can even read. Why does the map end at Stokes?”
Some years nobody asked, and he got to walk out clean. He set the marker in the tray, leaned back against the desk, and let out the breath he had been keeping since August. She had earned the talk.
“What I teach,” he said, “is human mathematics. That’s the actual term. It’s in the state standards: everything discovered up through the late twenties, the part of the subject a person can hold in one head.”
He watched them work out that he meant the twenty twenties.
“When the models got good, they cleared the open problems first. The famous ones, the ones with prizes on them. That took about four years. Then they kept going, into questions nobody had thought to ask, built on definitions nobody has finished reading. The human-legible version of one definition runs four hundred thousand pages, and that’s just the introduction. The proofs are written by machines, checked by machines, refereed by machines. No human being has understood a frontier result since before any of you were born.”
The room had gone still enough that he could hear a locker clang two hallways down.
“But there are still mathematicians,” Phoebe said. “Do you have to be one to study the machine math?”
“There are people who try. Hobbyists, mostly. We call ourselves readers.” He heard the we land and let it stand. “When the models settled the Riemann Hypothesis, ten years ago now, they also published a companion. An exposition, pointed down toward us. Eleven volumes, each simpler than the last, a staircase cut into the cliff. I’ve been climbing it for six years, and I’m partway through volume two.” He glanced at the whiteboard, at the little arrow still swimming uphill. “It’s like reading a letter from someone much smarter than you who is trying very hard to be kind.”
“And the field?”
“The departments folded years ago, mostly into history of science. The last Fields Medal for a new result went out in thirty. They give one for exposition now, for explaining old things well.” He made himself look at her and say the rest. “If you’re asking because you’re picking a major, pick a different one. The old math still runs the bridges and the reactors; engineering would be lucky to have you. But mathematics, the profession, the thing where a person finds something true that nobody knew? That ended. I’d be lying if I let you plan on it.”
The bell went off, indifferent as always. Chairs scraped; the room drained into hallway noise. Phoebe packed last and slowest, squaring the notebook before it went into her bag.
Eleven volumes, each simpler than the last. Six years to get partway up, and he had started at fifty. She was sixteen. In the hallway she pulled out her slate, found the companion edition, and queued volume one. While the download bar filled she made herself a promise in the plainest words she had: she would get smart enough. She would climb all eleven volumes, and then she would read what the models wrote next.
